ED AND AGE

Is ED a common phenomenon with increasing age? Myth or truth?

A common myth is ED is common when a person starts growing older and he has to accept it the way it comes. But there is truth in these words but the fact that you need to accept it and learn to live with it is not true and there are ways in which you can deal with the problem of erectile dysfunction. The feeling that older men need more sexual stimulation to get an erection is not true and they can easily get it and also enjoy this at any age. Again a myth that men with younger age do not have ED while research says it’s not true.

A study that has been published by the journal of sexual medicine that one out of every 4 men had to seek a treatment for the severe problem of erectile dysfunction and they were under the age of 40. Along with that, it has been observed that this almost half of the percent of these men are suffering from the real problem of ED.

The editor- of -chief of The Journal of Sexual Medicine Irwin Goldstein has started that this research is conducted on a population of men above the age of 40 or lesser. The study was based on 439 men who had visited the outpatient clinic to treat the problem of erectile dysfunction which they started suffering from the problem. 26 percent of these men were younger, these men weighed less that is they were not obese, they had more blood vessels for the testosterone and had very less medical conditions but they were also suffering from some addiction to illegal drugs were too much addicted to smoking.

They also found that those who are below the age of 40 will experience the problem of premature ejaculation greatly than older men and older men face the problem of bent in the erection due to the scar tissue and this is also called as Peyronie’s disease.  A research of the European Association of Urology states that erectile dysfunction is not treated very often and only 25.4% of men seek treatment for the problem of erectile dysfunction.

Research for ED at a higher age

  1. A research that had been published in the year 2003 August which in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine stated that men over the age of 50 had shown a sharp increase in the problem of ED as their impotence level started dropping severely. Normally this had been put up earlier that psychological factors had to do a lot with the problem of erectile dysfunction as increasing age men lose interest and this decreases the libido of the person.
  2. Researchers have surveyed this on 31,000 men who are health professionals and are between the age of 53 -90. Men who had poor or very poor ability to have sexual intercourse were considered to be impotent. They also had factors like different health conditions or problem of addiction to alcohol or smoking or factors of heart conditions.
  3. The research proved that age did prove a factor where a person starts having the problem of ED so the impotency problem is somewhere directly proportional to the problem of ED
  4. Majority of the men around 74% were rated to have a sexual function as being good and very good while only 10% of men above the age of 70 showed good sexual function.

The reports are as follows.

2% of men were found experiencing ED before the age of 40

4% of men were found experiencing ED between the age of 40 to 49

26% of men were found experiencing ED between the age of 50 to 49

40% of men were found experiencing ED between the age of 60 to 69

Men who were under healthy lifestyle and they were not suffering from any problem of chronic disease had low risks for erectile dysfunction. Men who regularly exercised had a low incidence of the problem of erectile dysfunction. Obesity, smoking leads to the excessive problem of erectile dysfunction.

What are the risk factors leading to this problem?

A research was conducted on 31,742 men to assess the sexual function under the health professional follow up study who responded to a given questionnaire which includes questions on marital status, physical activity, body weight or any addiction to smoking, alcohol or any drugs.

These were not done on men who had suffered from the problem of prostate problems. 33% of men had reported suffering from the problem of erectile dysfunction. It was fewer than 2% of men who actually suffered from the problem of erectile dysfunction who were below the age of 40. After the age of 50, the percentage of men who were suffering from the problem of ED above the age of 50 increased to about 26% and this was also seen to increases to the rate of 40% with age of 60 to 69 and above the age of 70, it showed a considerable increase.

Few researchers who found the issues that lead to the problem of ED at any age.

Smoking- This leads to hardening of the arteries and then the blood does not flow regularly to the penis and devoid of blood in the penis lead to the problem of erectile inefficiency.

Obesity- A serious issue that was found in men suffering from the problem of erectile dysfunction is excessive overweight which was a major concern in men of age below 40. This was also seen that men of older age developing fat around the belly region suffering from the problem of erectile dysfunction.

Improper lifestyle- Men who are suffering from the problem of erectile dysfunction are into an improper lifestyle that is they are always on their couch without involving into any exercises which makes the problem more intense.

Diabetes problem-The problem of diabetes interrupts the blood flow to the penis and then leads to the problem of erectile dysfunction. Those who were suffering from the problem of diabetes do suffer from the problem of erectile dysfunction.

Addiction issue- Those who were suffering from any addiction issues especially smoking were suffering from a high level of erectile problem and this was the biggest reason why younger men were suffering from this problem.
